About

The Center for Alternative Photography (CAP) in New York City is a workshop-based educational organization devoted to the teaching original 19th century photographic processes and 20th century emulsion-based photography.

Our mission is to broaden the palette of artistic and visual communication tools available to photographers, artists, and visual communicators. We teach photography comprehensively, starting from its invention (Daguerreotype, Collotype, Collodion processes, etc.), through to the digital age.

CAP has been active for five years and we hope to expand the Center through our workshops, our recent partnership with the International Center for Photography (ICP), the online journal, and new studios at our space in midtown Manhattan.

Our journal focuses on the images of artists who use a wide range of alternative photographic processes–both early photographic and modern. We also feature interviews, art criticism & reviews, historical interludes, and current events. CAP’s online journal merges the appeal of an arts periodical, the accessibility on an online resource, and the curatorial nature of a gallery–without taking itself too seriously.

Questions and submissions can be directed to Lisa Elmaleh at info@capworkshops.org.
